Should be required reading in all schools. Number 1 because it’s so good, and number 2 because after reading it we should NEVER EVER complain about our winter again. #everythingineedtoknowilearnedfromtheingalls #mouseywouldhavedied

I sent this to Mrs. Schmenkman earlier this week because she has oodles of kitties. I then realized that this applies to me as well. #perspective #felinepride

Wednesday Hodgepodge

Hello there, thanks for stopping by! If you would like to join the Hodgepodge, click on the button below and head over to Joyce’s, she is a very nice gal and would love to have you link up!

1. When did you last have to interact, either by phone or in person, with someone in a government run agency? On a scale of 1-10, how would you rate the experience? (10 being fabulous and 1 being pass the Tylenol)

I went to the United States Post Office yesterday to mail something and pick up a roll of stamps. I guess it was a 10 because I have no complaints. The line wasn’t awful, there were 4 gals working, which is 2 more than there usually are. My transaction was smooth.

2. The current governor of Wisconsin is considering a run for President next time around. Walker attended Marquette University, but never graduated. In terms of any candidate running for the office of President (not asking here if you agree or disagree with Scott Walker’s politics) would the lack of a college degree influence your vote or no? Would that be a factor in your support of any candidate running for public office, even a role less weighty than President?

I don’t think it would be a problem for me. I have not been all that impressed with some of the college graduates we have had in politics recently. Maybe we need someone who has come up through the ranks in a different way. There are a lot of very educated, lacking in common sense and ethics folks running around thes days.

3. When did you last visit a place or site named for George Washington or Abraham Lincoln, and what was that place or site?

We visited George Washington’s home in 2005, can that count?
4. February 16th was President’s Day in the US, but did you know it was also National Almond Day? I didn’t think so : ) Do you like almonds? If so, what’s a food/dish/recipe you enjoy that contains almonds?

I do like almonds! Roasted with a little salt is my favorite way. Next would be in homemade granola, YUM!

5.The television program Saturday Night Live celebrated it’s 40th anniversary this past weekend. Were/are you a fan of the show? If so what has been your favorite (or one of your favorite) skits, sayings, or characters that came out of the program?

I have been a fan of the show since my teens, so not quite 40 years 🙂 I honestly don’t know if I can pick favorites, that seems like an impossible task! I have always liked it when the characters could hardly keep from cracking up. We still use lines from some skits on a regular basis, it’s really funny when the kids watch an old show and it dawns on them “OH, that’s where they got that line from!!!”

Some of our favorite lines from sketches are

“simmah down now!” Cheri Oteri

“Chickens make baaaaad housepets”.

“I must say!”! Martin Short as Ed Grimley

“Demonic raisins, I rebuke you!” Jan Hooks as Tammy Faye Bakker

“Strategery” Will Ferrell as George W. Bush

“That bird has devil eyes” and “that bird is a liar!” Tracy Morgan as Brian Fellows

“Champ-an-ya” The Continental with Christopher Walken

and of course “I need more cowbell!”

We are known to pick out an obscure line and run it into the ground also. Lately, it has been “it’s origami, that’s Spanish for goose”. I can’t explain the things we think are funny.

The parts I thought were funny when I was younger might not be my favorites now. Every decade has its charms!  Weekend Update has usually been clever. My favorite performers have been Mike Meyers, Phil Hartman, Jan Hooks, Amy Pohler, Will Ferrell, Martin Short (I MUST SAY!), Dana Carvey, Maya Rudolph, and probably 20 more.

I like watching the show on DVR now so you can fast forward through the boring/dumb/particularly obnoxious parts!

6. Anything purple within ten feet of you? What is it?

Nope. That is a very under represented color in our home.

7. Back in December I asked you to submit a question for a future HP as part of a giveaway I was hosting. I grabbed this one from those entries, submitted by Zoanna who blogs over at Penchant for Pens. Thanks Zoanna!
She asks, “How often do you make your bed, and how do you like to make it-pull the covers all the way up over the pillows, tuck the covers in around the pillows, or place all the pillows on top of the covers?”

Our bed is rarely made because someone is almost always in it! It’s made after I change the sheets, pull the covers up with the pillows on top.

One of my favorite parts of the Saturday Night Live 40th Anniversary show, That’s When You Break.

Have a good week!

Potent Quotable-Valentines Day

Yesterday was the fifth anniversary of my Mother going home to be with the Lord. On one hand I can’t believe it has been that long. On the other hand, it seems like forever.

We jokingly say in my Mother’s family that we have to choose the holiday of our passing. Our Grandfather was buried on Christmas Eve. Our Grandmother passed away on Thanksgiving. Mom was Valentines Day. I am sure her brother breathes a sigh of relief when holidays pass!

It feels right to talk about her on this day, but I talk about her on most days. She is seamlessly woven into the fabric of my heart and mind. I remember her voice, her laughter, her expressions, conversations. Did I always repeat, “as my Mom used to say…” as frequently as I do now?

She comes up in conversation. We all have our little keepsakes that remind us of her in some way. I see her in our children. I hear her coming out of MY OWN MOUTH!!

She was and is loved, remembered and missed.

To live in hearts we leave behind
Is not to die.
~Thomas Campbell, “Hallowed Ground”

Oh heart, if one should say to you that the soul perishes like the body, answer that the flower withers, but the seed remains. ~Khalil Gibran

Some day you will read in the papers that D.L. Moody of East Northfield, is dead. Don’t you believe a word of it! At that moment I shall be more alive than I am now; I shall have gone up higher, that is all, out of this old clay tenement into a house that is immortal- a body that death cannot touch, that sin cannot taint; a body fashioned like unto His glorious body.

Author: D.L. Moody

We are all the better for having had her love in our lives.

John 14:1-30 ESV

“Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also. And you know the way to where I am going.

John 3:16 ESV

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

I firmly believe she is in heaven, decorating and gardening for the glory of her Lord and Savior. We will see her again.

Y’All, it is –10 degrees out there.

Not whining, just an information update. Mousey will do the actual whining.

I told her she is dangerously close to being labeled a complainer. But, she is cute, so we will change that to Grumble Bunny.

Our BSF lesson this week was about complaining. God doesn’t like it. I think we all know that, but it was a good reminder.

Complaining can be contagious. I think we all know that too.

I complain on occasion. I think we all know that.

So the moral of the story? Don’t be a Grumble Bunny.

I keep telling myself that Laura Ingalls Wilder lived through a worse winter than this.

I got new glasses. I don’t like them. It is my way.

Mousey and Ab-Cat did too. Mousey is enjoying seeing for the first time in five years. Vanity, thy name is Mouselina.

She is also trying contacts. They are not going quite as well. At first they really bothered her eyes. The next pair are WAY more comfortable, but she unfortunately cannot see out of one eye. As you can imagine, there has been some back and forth to the eye doctor.

The Ab-Cat has also been back and forth with the fit of her glasses and her darling new sunglasses. What is wrong with us?

I downloaded BooMama’s A Little Salty To Cut The Sweet and BigMama’s The Antelope In My Living Room for ZERO American dollars on my Kindle last week!!!!! Happy Valentines Day to ME!

I just looked and it’s not available anymore 😦   I am so sorry I did not let you know sooner.

Because it is negative degrees outside, that means I have multiple errands to run today, that’s how I roll.

But Honey, my friend CMB and our cats will thank me, so there’s that incentive.

Also my back.

Did I mention I have a new chiropractor? I like him a lot. He has helped my neck and headaches a whole bunch. He is now working on this hurty shoulder attached to the chicken wing, rib cage, bra strap area. He calls it something about the rotator, rib tip something or other. I had this problem once before and it took a sweet forever to go away on its own.

Y’All, he is about KILLING me but I have to admit it is feeling some better. I have to go see him again today before he leaves for vacation so he can mangle me again.

I had to pick a new picture for my avatar on the new blob. I chose this one.

Unfortunately, I had to crop my brother Beeve out of it, but I will show you guys the whole thing. I like his face.

Ok, gotta git. Enjoy your day!

I think I could copy this. In a way. Sort of.

So cute for grandbeebees!

Chocolate peanut butter cup overload cake. Yes please. I think Honey would want this all to himself!

I love this salad but have never in my life made it. Why? WHY? I am going to make it for lunch someday.

Unsalted is good. Beach living without all that nasty hurricane business.

Her mother would be proud.

Have a good Thursday!

Way Back Wednesday Hodgepodge

Hi Guys! So glad you stopped by! If you would like to join up with The Hodgepodge, click the button below and head over to Joyce’s to link. As always, special air kisses to Joyce for giving us all something to talk about!

1. Have you ever written a love letter? Have you written one recently? Had one written to you? Did you keep it?
I am sure I have but it has not been recently. I have a lot of cards and letters and notes from Honey when we were dating and newlyweds. He can be quite the romantic fellow! I keep them all in a box in the basement. I should get them out and read them. He was a big old hunk of Honey!

This jogged a memory for me. For the majority of our 29 years of marriage Honey has worked at night. He used to get home and go to bed before I woke up so we used to write notes to each other every day just to keep each other up to date on what we had been doing. Some of them were sweet, some were funny, a lot were probably mundane. It would probably be fun to read them now but I did not keep them.

2. What’s a movie that ends in a way you especially love?

Oh, there are SO many! Who doesn’t love the end of You’ve Got Mail? Or Dan in Real Life, or That Thing You Do?
3. Something that makes your heart sing? And for those of you who are parents, I mean something besides your children that makes your heart sing?

A beautiful day, spending time with family and loved ones, a worship song that meets me right where I am, and a really good God who intervenes in my life daily to show me that He cares for me and about what concerns me. I LOVE seeing a God fingerprint!
4. What’s the last event you had to attend, phone call you had to make, routine task you needed to complete, or meal you had to prepare, that you did do, but only half-heartedly?

Hmmm, there have been a lot of halfhearted meals in my day. I feel like going to events can be halfhearted, because I don’t always like to do things at night, but once I get there I am usually fine. I try and remember that the next time I have to do something I am halfhearted about!
5. Tuna fish salad-yay or blech? If you said yay, how do you like your tuna salad prepared? Hey, this is the Hodgepodge, right?

Yay, but not all faincy. Tuna, celery and mayo please.
6. What’s something you ‘know by heart‘?

Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him and He will direct your paths. Proverbs 3:5&6

Literally and figuratively know by heart.

7. In the spirit of Valentine’s Day, what two or three word phrase would you write on a conversation heart for someone you love? That someone could be a spouse, child, parent, cousin, bestie…anyone at all whom you love.

How about four words?  “I like your face”, as in Ob La Di Ob La Da by The Beatles. Desmond says to Molly “Girl, I like your face”.

8.  Insert your own random thought here.

I went to Target yesterday to pick up some stuff and as I was leaving I saw a pair of broken, crushed, winter ick covered kitty ears lying in the parking lot. It immediately took me back to when Mousey was a little girl and wore her kitty ears to Target, and just about everywhere else! She would have been so sad to see them wet and dirty and driven over multiple times.

Here is a Way Back When-sday of our favorite little kitty cat ballerina. She just wasn’t dressed without her ears!

Have a good week.
