Way Back When-sday Hodgepodge

Hi Guys, welcome back to The Hodgepodge! Joyce, our fearless leader needed a break last week but she’s baaaaaack now! Click the button below to head over to her place if you would like to join us.

1. It’s officially summer (in the northern hemisphere anyway). Which summer month is best and why?

I do not actually have an opinion on this. When the kids were little they were all equally as hectic. Now they are all different each year. I feel like this summer has been busier than usual already. There were only a handful of set in stone things on the calendar but we seem to be filling in around them rapidly. Can I just say they are all good in their own way? That feels like a cop out.

2. Can you swim? How did you learn? June 27th is National Sunglasses Day. How many pair do you own?

I CAN swim! My Mom felt it was important that my brother and I learn how to swim because she never really did. She wanted us to feel more confident in the water. She also did not want to worry about us being in the water. We had a few lessons at the YMCA, but we mostly learned by massive amounts of time spent splashing around in my Aunt Nancy’s pool! She was always proud that we swam like fish!

I have prescription sunglasses, so I don’t have 50 pair kicking around. I have always wanted to just buy a cute pair off the rack! Maybe in heaven when I get my new, perfect eyes! I have one pair and 2 old pair of way older prescription that are basically useless and backups if the good pair break. One pair doesn’t even have bifocals and are only fit for cutting the grass! I did order some new ones last week, looking forward to those, then I should probably chuck those last 2 pair.
3. What characteristic do you judge most harshly in yourself? How about in others?

I have mentioned before that I am not a thoughtful type and I am especially good at berating myself for thinking of something thoughtful to do AFTER THE FACT. I can also talk myself out of doing something for many reasons, including but not limited to, they don’t want that from me, that seems nosey, they are probably overwhelmed and that would be too much, I don’t know them that well and they might think it’s weird, and why do I think they would want bagels and cream cheese? They probably don’t want bagels and cream cheese! That last one still haunts me. I should probably not ruminate over these things and realize that they could be Holy Spirit guided, and STOP OVERTHINKING AND JUST DO IT!!!

I judge others most harshly for lack of common sense. I know common sense is not a flower that grows in everyone’s garden but it’s very hard to overlook stoopid.
4. Robert Frost wrote the now well known poem entitled The Road Not Taken. What’s a road (literal or figurative) you’ve always wanted to travel, and where do you hope it takes you?

I am going to go literal and say traveling with Honey. We have not had the time nor opportunity to travel much the last 30 years. We would like to go to Europe, The Holy Land, and out west with The Schmenkman’s some day. We are travelling to South Carolina in the fall to have a look see for retirement, so that is a road we will travel very soon!

5. Popsicles-yay or nay? If you answered yay, what’s your favorite flavor?

I don’t mind them but I can think of way better things to waste calories on. Abby and I are especially fond of Good Humor strawberry shortcake bars. She was hospitalized for 7 weeks at 6 years old and we both have memories of going down to the University of Michigan cafeteria in the evenings for a special treat.

6. Brexit-on a scale of 1-10 how knowledgeable are you on what’s involved here? (1=very knowledgeable and 10=what’s Brexit) Is this news you’ll follow or is it something you think won’t impact your life in any way shape or form?I was a 10 when it happened and a solid 8 now. I still don’t think I know enough to speak intelligently about it with others. I have a tendency to think if the press is against it than it is probably not all bad. Cynic much?
7. Share a favorite song on your summer play list.

Justin Timberlake Can’t Stop the Feeling!!!! Song of the summer!!!!!

I had heard it before I left for Virginia last month. I tried all week to find it on the radio so Schmenky could hear it! I concluded that Virginia didn’t love Justin AT ALL! Finally, on the last day we heard it twice in Manassas!!!! Manassas loves you J.T.!!!!

8. Insert your own random thought here.

Way Back When-sday! Probably around 1999 or 2000. Here are the kids with our Dear Friends the Hostler Girls, at one of our favorite restaurants, Mexican Fiesta!! Or as we call it, Chip and Dip! This could have been after church on a Sunday or after a piano recital. Either way, a very common sight! They probably thought they were SO cool at their own table!

I heart those little nuggets!!!!

Thanks for stopping by!

List O Stuff

Y’All, it’s been a little busy around here. I just keep thinking that things will calm down “next week”, but that has not been the case….since MAY! Mostly good stuff, plus all that temple maintenance business. There have been things to do, places to go, visitors in our house and out.

How about a list of some stuff?

Some of us BSF-fers met up at Chip and Dip for a luncheon! It was so nice to see the gals and we even met Dear Sandra’s little grandson Asher, who we passed around like a football and was a sweet little angel baby!!!

The very next week there were more BSF-fers, again at Chip and Dip, to visit with our dear friend Miss Mattie who was visiting The Mitten from her new home in Texas!!! Oh was it good to hug her neck and catch up!

Another gathering was held at The Chip and Dip yesterday with Jip the Farm Dog, Heifer Lynn and CMB. I have no picture to show you, I am so sorry. There has been a LOT of catching up lately.

The Ab-Cat and I have been thoroughly enjoying this on Netflix. I had heard of it but never knew what it was about. There was the vague idea that it was sleazy and not something I would be interested in. I’m not sure why we decided to give it a whirl, but I am here to tell you that we are liking it very much! I won’t say it is completely wholesome, but Jane is adorable and it is a lot sweeter than most stuff on tv these days.

Abby and I saw this on opening weekend because she could not wait. She read me some of the reviews, which were not very good, and I am here to tell you it was fine. We have been BIG fans of the original over the years and were excited to see what they would do with a sequel. It was NOT nearly as good as the first, but it was another decent, end of civilization as we know it thrill ride! I don’t know what all those negative Nellie’s were expecting, the humans WIN!

Has anyone seen this? Those two can be hilarious! It’s rather like Saturday Night Live, some stuff is funny, some not so much, there are fun guest stars, but it’s not as raunchy as SNL is now. Maya Rudolph and Martin Short can be hilarious! And two words, Jiminy Glick. Oh dear!

The Boy turned 25 on the first day of summer!!!! How has that happened??

Mrs Schmenkman has a BABY RACCOON!!!!!!! Oh my goodness is he a cutie!!!! I met him on Skype and I want to kiss his adorable nose! He is about 5 weeks old and she assures me he doesn’t stink.. I’m not sure what his name is but I’m pretty sure she didn’t name him what she planned to after our girls said it was slang for something unmentionable.

I have about 6 posts languishing in the drafts file, so clearly I have some things to say. I will be back for The Hodgepodge tomorrow, be there or be []. Be rectangle, that didn’t work out like I thought!

Some Sassies

Let’s go back to Virginia for one last post. What would a Memorial Day Extravaganza be without some kitty witties?

This is Poppet, When I am down there, she loves me best. This is how she likes me to sit, and if I move she complains.

This is Casey. He is in love with my hair. Like seriously in love, licking, coco butts, and excessive marking. I have a great video, no idea how to get it from my phone to computer. Sad face.

The Schmenkman’s horse Miracle gets to roam the backyard in the afternoons. Cause she is a beloved pet.

Schmenky was replacing her hay bag. Yes, I learned what a hay bag was this trip. Was not aware there was such a thing.

Schmenky and her girl!

This is my roommate Princess. She has anxiety that prevents her from mixing with the other house kittys, so she lives in the spare bedroom. Quite happily I might add. This was our third time bunking together and I am POSITIVE she remembers me!!!!! I had to work very hard the first year to make friends and gain her trust, now she just plops down next to me.

She is a loud purrer, supreme biscuit maker, and soooo soft!

Have I mentioned we are fans of the Snap Chat? Such utter delicious NONSENSE!!!

I love her big nose. It really is big.

On the princess pillow.

Thanks for having me once again Schmeky Catherine Schmenkerton!

Until we meet again Virginia!

Way Back When-sday Hodgepodge

Hi Guys, glad you stopped by! If you would like to join us click on the button below and head over to Joyce’s to link up.

1. If you could sit beside and/or jump in any lake in the whole wide world today, which lake would you choose and why?

I think I would choose to sit beside Gun Lake where my aunt and uncle have a cottage. They have owned it since I was in high school so there are a LOT of memories!

There is the captain heading out to open the boat.

It has lots of good place to sit, front and back.

As well as inside. We have played a lot of cards at that table overlooking the lake!

Uncle Bob, Aunt Phyllis, their daughter and son in law, Girl Cousin Lindsay and Rob B, along with Honey and Ab-Cat.

There have been rumblings that they might sell, they are spending their winters in Florida these days. I understand the reasons but everyone will be so sad to see it go.

We are heading up there in July, hopefully not for the last time!

2. What’s your favorite ‘fruity’ drink?

I don’t drink much in the way of a fruity drink, other than the very occasional lemonade.

3. I read a list here of thirteen things to do right now to simplify your life. They were-

clean as you go, re-evaluate your relationships (cut toxic ties), unsubscribe (too many blogs and websites), de-clutter, write down your daily goals, reply to emails right away, forget multitasking, create a morning routine, re-evaluate your commitments (which hobbies and responsibilities are most important to you), say no, clean up your computer, and plan your day ahead

Which of the tasks listed do you currently find most helpful in keeping life simple? Which item on the list should you adopt in order to simplify your life this month?

I find that a routine can be helpful to keep me on a track, but I am very flexible. Sometimes a rigid schedule is the last thing you need to keep things simple.

Decluttering makes me feel so accomplished!

I can also say no to things. I realize this is a very hard thing for some, but just watching them juggle their ridiculous, jam packed schedules is not appealing to me. Just because someone else thinks I should do something doesn’t always sway me if I don’t feel that God has called me to do it, or I really don’t want to. That’s not to say that I never do things I don’t feel like doing. Many times I do things because it’s the right thing to do for myself, my family or for others. God directs those things.

Because it is summer and most of the things I do throughout the year are on hiatus, I could probably benefit with a loose plan for the day so I don’t just fritter my time away. A loose plan though, I wouldn’t want to miss out on anything fun because I was supposed to do laundry on Monday!

4. What did you do the summer after you graduated from high school?

No earthly idea. I probably had fun though because I don’t think I got a job until the fall.

5. Are you a fan of podcasts? If so what’s a favorite?

I have heard of them but don’t listen to any.

6. Do you think today’s fathers have it harder, easier, or just different than fathers in the past?

I’m sure every generation had its challenges. Most fathers seem more hands on now than in some years past.
7. Tell us one way you’re like your father? Or not at all like your father if that’s easier?

I have always been told that I look like my Father and his people. It’s a strong gene.

8.  Insert your own random thought here.

Here is Way Back When-sday in 2009 or 2010 with Mousey and Little Goomba who is now Medium Goomba! She was reading him one of his very favorite books, Old McDonald. He liked to make all those animal noises and was a champ at pig snorting! I believe he is showing us that he was “SO BIG!!” Look at that sweet little Mousey gal! Probably going into 9th grade. I miss those little peanuts!

Thanks for stopping by, enjpy your week!

The Beaves

I believe I have mentioned that Mrs. Schmenkman is a wild life rehabilitator, specializing in the care of beavers. Last year was a banner year and she had four of various ages! She is back down to two at the moment since releasing one this spring and bringing the other to the Howell Nature Center in Michigan, where they also had a beaver that would not be released back into the wild due to injury.

Schmenky and Mr. C will  still be caring for Michi and Pita one more year. I went out to meet them!

They built the beaves their very own ce-ment pond last year!

They have a couple of satisfied customers!

Beaves, like people, like certain foods better than others.

These two evidently enjoy this native Virginia Creeper. Pretty sure that was what is was called. Schmenky stopped the car on the dirt road near her house, got out and checked to see if there was poison ivy around anywhere, and yanked this down off a tree! I guess it is their fave! There is more where that came from!

Maybe these two are boy and girl and can be released together. Or maybe they will feel more like brother and sister since they have been raised side by side. Or maybe they are both the same. Only an x-ray can tell!

They are getting so big! This one was being bottle fed when I was last there!

They are having a good life up on Sassy Cat Hill!

One more year of beaver/childrearing to go!
