We were studying Acts 2 in my Tuesday morning Bible study this week. That passage is where the Holy Spirit was given to believers after Jesus ascended back to heaven, and a glimpse into the lives of the early days of the church. Those were amazing times!
When we came to these verses I said they reminded me of the community we have experienced in Small Group Bible studies. I then went on to shamelessly plug the benefits of believers doing life together in small groups! Learning together, eating together, helping those in need, praising God together, enjoying the favor of all and adding new believers to the group.
42 They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. 43 Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles. 44 All the believers were together and had everything in common. 45 They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. 46 Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, 47 praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.
One of the gals in our group told a very touching story of a friend whose daughter had passed away. To help their friend cope with the loss and to give her something on her calendar to look forward to, a group of friends decided to gather monthly to have dinner and come along side their friend as she grieved. This was years ago and these women still meet to care for and help shoulder the burdens that affect us all as humans in a fallen world. Somewhere along the way someone told them about the community among elephants, where they gathered around their weak and troubled member, sometimes even huddling so close that they actually helped the suffering elephant remain upright. They now call their group The Elephants.
What a beautiful example and model for community the Lord has shown us in His creation.
I told this story to Honey and he sent me this article.
Care for each other with glad and sincere hearts. Be an elephant.
